Summary (1995 - Granada - Dakar)

The ever-changing Dakar did not start in Paris this year as it had in the seventeen previous editions, but in the Spanish city of Granada. The world championship was fought out solely between Mitsubishi and Citroen after no real victory had been achieved at the previous year's Dakar, when the Pajeros had been forced into an unlucky retirement. It was also the year in which Mitsubishi sent a heavily modified Pajero into the race. The atmosphere was charged with tension even before the competition began. The Pajero's wheelbase and track width were enlarged, so that it was now 2 metres wide and 4.3 metres long; in addition, the engine was bored out from 2.2 litres to 2.4 litres and now delivered 350 hp at 5,500 rpm. These changes resulted in an increase of the top speed to 220 kilometres per hour.  The veterans Jean-Pierre Fontenay, Kenjiro Shinozuka and Bruno Saby climbed into their Pajeros for the fourth conquest of the Paris - Dakar, with Saby's Pajero being a little longer and wider still in order to withstand the demands of the desert. The top manufacturers Mitsubishi and Citroen fought a heated race, with Mitsubishi taking the fastest time six times while Citroen managed it eight times; in the end, the Pajeros took second, third and fourth place. In the class for modified production-based vehicles, the Pajeros claimed the first two places and ninth and tenth in the overall standings. Five more finished outside the top 10 and proved once again the quality and durability of the Pajero.
