Summary (1991 - Paris - Tripoli - Dakar)

The 1991 rally was the 13th and most challenging running yet of this great motorsport spectacle. Mitsubishi set out once again to maintain its fantastic record and to repeat its success of 1985. As in the previous year, Mitsubishi sent its most successful World Championship competitor to date into the race, Kenneth Eriksson, who was more used to the gravel tracks and asphalt roads he tackled with his Galant VR-4. Like many other drivers who competed in the Pajero at   the Dakar, he found that the Pajero made the course easier for him, with its superb performance and astonishing handling and ruggedness - qualities Eriksson was already familiar with. The new Pajero prototype was a winner even before a single wheel had turned at the Dakar, for it had successfully competed in the Australian Safari with Shinozuka at the wheel. But development raced ahead at an astonishing pace, and the machines that lined up at the start of the 13th Dakar were the most highly developed yet. Lartigue, Shinozuka and Fontenay joined Eriksson to take on the latest challenge through North West Africa. Once again, Mitsubishi dominated the standings with three cars in the top five. It was an outstanding performance, but it was to be only a foretaste of the best result of all time..
